The name of the new Turkish prime minister and the president of the ruling party, who will succeed Ahmet Davutoglu after he was forced to step down because of disagreements with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, will be announced on Thursday, as Turkish media official said.
The Turkish official, who asked for anonymity, as well as several Turkish media outlets, explained that the executive committee of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) will meet Thursday. After that, the name of the only candidate to succeed Davutoglu will be announced.
Binali Yildirim, the Transport Minister, 60, who is known to be very close to the head of state, is being suggested by many for the position of the new chairman of the Justice and Development Party, during an emergency meeting that was called for on Sunday. According to the party’s regulations, the chairman shall automatically become prime minister.
An opinion poll showed that Yildirim makes the most likely candidate to win. He is the engineer of the major civil projects launched by Erdogan.
The cadres of the JDP are likely to meet with President Erdogan, on Wednesday, who will have the final word in this option.
Davutoglu, who was forced to step down earlier this month after the tension with Erdogan, announced he would not run for a second term.
After the election of a new chairman for the ruling party (JDP), Davutoglu would hand his resignation on Monday to Erdogan, who is supposed to request his successor to form a new cabinet.
