An Egyptian military court gave death sentences to eight Muslim Brotherhood members on Sunday for their alleged involvement in the killing of security staff, Quds Press has reported. Although they have the right to appeal against the sentences, all of the defendants rejected the charges mentioned in the indictment against them.
At the same time, the court issued life sentences to 12 people and sentenced six others to 15 years in prison. Two defendants were acquitted and two were sentenced in absentia.
In February, the Court of Cassation accepted appeals against the death sentences handed down to 149 defendants charged over an attack on a police station in Kerdasa, Cairo. Eleven police officers were reported to have been killed in the incident. Thirty-four of the death sentences were issued in absentia. The Criminal Court in Giza also sentenced a minor to ten years in prison.
