Tunisian president proposes formation of unity government

June 3, 2016 at 10:21 am

Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi called on Thursday for a national unity government whose priorities include the war on terror, corruption and establishing democracy. He has proposed that the government include all parties and unions.

In a televised interview, Essebsi said:“Any unity government would have to include the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT) and the Confederation of Industry, Trade and Handicrafts (UTICA).”

“The government may also include parties that form the ruling coalition, such as Nidaa Tounes, and the Ennahda Party, as well as independents.”

“Fighting terrorism, corruption and unemployment, as well as addressing regional disparities, would likely remain the priorities for any new government,” he added.

“Its [the current government] performance is acceptable, but not 100 per cent successful because it must apply and enforce the country’s law to anyone hindering its work,” he said, in reference to protests, especially those that hindered the phosphorus production, costing the state nearly $2.5 billion in losses.
