European airlines resumed their flights to Turkey following a failed military coup attempt against the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Reuters said German airline Lufthansa, British Airways and TUI which owns the Thomson and First Choice holiday companies have resumed their flights to Turkey.

Turkey has expanded its crackdown on supporters of the coup attempt, bringing the number of detainees from the armed forces and the judiciary to 6,000 people.

The government said it fully controlled the country and the economy.

A spokesman for Lufthansa said the company has resumed its flights to Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir and Bodrum.

One flight between Istanbul and Frankfurt has been cancelled as well as another flight between Munich and Ankara.

Eurowings, a subsidiary of Lufthansa, has also resumed its trips to Turkey.

A spokesman for Thomas Cook said that most German guests who had booked a holiday to Antalya or Bodrum had taken their flights on Saturday, adding that flights from the UK were operating as normal.

A spokeswoman for TUI said some 180,000 people are now spending their holidays in Turkey and only 30 people have returned early.

“It’s a normal day for us,” the spokesperson added.

British Airways also resumed its flights from Britain to Turkish cities, including Istanbul and Izmir, on Sunday.
