Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas (R) shakes hands with US Secretary of State John Kerry (L) before their meeting at Abbas’s Headquarter in Ramallah, November 24, 2015

US Secretary of State John Kerry has suggested a high profile meeting with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Cairo, QudsNet news agency reported on Friday. Kerry apparently made the suggestion during his recent meeting with Abbas in Paris; it is believed that foreign ministers from a number of Arab states would also be invited to participate.

In response, Abbas called for the release of the fourth batch of pre-Oslo Palestinian prisoners, as well as the implementation of all previous agreements as a precondition for any talks with the Israelis.

Reports in Italy claimed that Abbas reiterated his insistence that any movement towards negotiations must keep up with the French peace initiative, which includes calls for an international peace conference before the end of this year.
