Assad: Syrian crisis is between Russia and the West

October 14, 2016 at 11:59 am

The conflict in Syria is between the West and Russia, Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad said, adding that regaining control of Aleppo will be the Syrian army’s way to push opposition groups he called “terrorists” into Turkey.

In excerpts from an interview conducted by Russia’s Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper, Al-Assad described the Turkish activities in Syria as an “invasion”, as it contradicts international law.

This is in reference to “Operation Euphrates Shield”, which was executed by the Free Syrian Army with support from Turkish troops on 24 August to oust Daesh militants from Syria’s border with Turkey, north of Aleppo.

Al-Assad added that he hopes that the rapprochement between Russia and Turkey leads to pushing Ankara to changing its policies towards Syria.

He added that those he described as “terrorists” lost territories in Syria due to the Russian military intervention.
