Tunisia has suspended a tax imposed on cars entering the country from Algeria.
The tax of 30 Tunisian dinars ($13.7) was introduced in August and was met with protests by Algerians along a number of border crossings.
“Based on the instructions of Prime Minister Youssef Chahed, it was decided that the tax should be suspended and memorandums have been circulated to all border posts to begin the implementation of the decision to cancel the admission tax on Algerian vehicles until a final abolition order by the House of Representatives.”
The move to impose the tax was part of Tunisia’s efforts to combat its deficit and raise €20 million ($22.2 million) per year.
