Official Statistics: Egypt’s unemployment reaches 12.6% in Q3 of 2016

Egypt’s unemployment rate has risen to 12.6 per cent during the third quarter of 2016 (from July to September), compared to 12.5 per cent during the second quarter of the same year (April to June), Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) report revealed.

Anadolu Agency quoted CAPMAS on Wednesday stating that the size of labour force in Egypt reached 28.8 million workers in the third quarter of 2016, marking an increase of 289,000 people compared to the previous quarter of the same year, and 814,000 people or 2.9 per cent more than Q3 of 2015.

Unemployment rate in Egypt’s urban areas hit 14.2 per cent of the total manpower in urban areas during the third quarter of 2016, increasing from 14.1 per cent during the second quarter of 2016, but down from 15 per cent during the same quarter of 2015.

In rural areas, unemployment stood at 11.4 per cent of the total labour force, compared to 11.2 per cent during the previous quarter (Q2) of 2016 and the third quarter of 2015.

CAPMAS report explained that the unemployed workforce stood at 3.6 million individuals during the end of the third quarter of 2016, registering an increase of 80,000 people compared to the second quarter of the same year.

The agency report pointed out that the majority of the unemployed are youth.

Last September, the ratio of unemployed youth in the age group from 15 to 19 years reached 11.8 per cent, 27.5 per cent in the age group from 20 to 24, and 42.1 per cent in the age group from 25 to 29.
