The Syrian opposition is awaiting Russia’s response regarding its plan for the monitoring of the ceasefire, Masralarabia.com reported the head of the Syrian opposition’s negotiating team.
In response to a question regarding the start of new negotiations, Mohamed Alloush said: “We have no information. We had not been informed about anything. We are awaiting the Russian response to our plan.”
About the new expected round of Geneva talks, he said: “It is early to speak about this. We are still in discussion… When we get a final decision about it, we will think [about Geneva].”
During the Astana talks, which were held on 23-24 January, Alloush said that the opposition delegation had introduced a plan related to monitoring the ceasefire to the Russians, noting that Moscow said it would discuss the plan within a week.
Russia, Turkey and Iran proposed a plan for the ceasefire and holding talks about the Syrian crisis in Astana. A UN delegation headed by the organisation’s envoy to Syria Stephane de Mistura attended the talks.
A final statement of the talks, issued jointly by Russia, Turkey and Iran, said that these countries agreed on a tripartite plan to monitor the ceasefire in Syria in order to guarantee no violations.
The three countries expressed their support for the participation of the Syrian opposition, including the armed opposition in the Geneva talks, which were planned to start on 8 February, but this was later postponed.
