An Israeli Air Force jet shot down a Hamas reconnaissance drone over the Mediterranean coastline on Thursday evening, Israel Radio has reported. The drone was said to be flying from the Gaza Strip out over the sea.

According to an Israel Defence Forces spokesperson, the drone was shot down before it managed to infiltrate Israeli airspace and fell into the sea after being intercepted. “The IDF will not allow any airspace violation and will act resolutely against any such attempt,” added the spokesperson. There was no comment from Al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas.
The movement used the unmanned Ababil aircraft for the first time during the Israeli military offensive against the civilians of the Gaza Strip in the summer of 2014. A London-based commentator pointed out that Israel’s aggression in Palestinian airspace confirmed its ongoing de facto occupation of the Gaza Strip.
