Turkey’s Economy Minister Nihat Zeybekci said yesterday that his country’s bid to join the European Union is a secondary goal, and that his country was willing to do so as long as Ankara can achieve the bloc’s standards in a fair manner.
Zeybekci made the remarks during an interview with Turkish television station NTV.
Relations between Ankara and Brussels have become strained over the past several months and reached a low level in the period before a referendum on 16 April which gave President Recep Tayyip Erdogan broad new executive powers.
