Turkish minister says EU membership ‘secondary goal’

May 5, 2017 at 11:13 am

Turkey’s Economy Minister Nihat Zeybekci said yesterday that his country’s bid to join the European Union is a secondary goal, and that his country was willing to do so as long as Ankara can achieve the bloc’s standards in a fair manner.

Zeybekci made the remarks during an interview with Turkish television station NTV.

Relations between Ankara and Brussels have become strained over the past several months and reached a low level in the period before a referendum on 16 April which gave President Recep Tayyip Erdogan broad new executive powers.
