Name of Jerusalem street changed to honour Israeli soldiers

A group of settlers accompanied by Israel Police and the so-called “border guards” in the Israeli army changed the name of Sultan Suleiman Street in Jerusalem to Al-Batalat Street, to honor Israeli female soldiers who have died.

The street, located near Damascus Gate in occupied East Jerusalem, is being renamed in memory of the Israeli soldiers who were killed at the entrance to the Old City. Settlers also lit candles in their memory.

A sticker was placed to cover the name of the street labelling it with the new name, Heroines Street, in Hebrew, Arabic and English.

“Over the past few years, the blood of many of our children has spilled in the capital city of Jerusalem’s streets in defending her residents,” read a letter that was sent by leaders of several organisations who backed the move.

The street has been closed to Jerusalemites since 16 June when Israeli occupation forces set up road blocks and stopped people accessing it.
