US drone strike in southern Somalia

July 4, 2017 at 12:19 pm

The United States executed a drone strike in southern Somalia, targeting the Al-Shabaab armed group on Sunday, reported VOA News.

The drone strike targeted vehicles in the town of Kunya Barrow, in the Shebelle region.

There are no reports on the number of civilian casualties or Al-Shabaab fighters killed.

This is the first drone strike after a Navy SEAL was killed during a special operation raid on Al-Shabaab fighters in Somalia.

Al-Shabaab has been fighting for years to implement a strict version of Islamic law across Somalia. The African Union and Somalia’s national army have driven the group out of large cities and commercial ports but have failed to prevent the group’s lethal attacks.
