UAE: Houthis obstacle to peace deal in Yemen

September 22, 2017 at 1:26 pm

The Houthis are an obstacle to a political solution in Yemen, the United Arab Emirates Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Anwar Gargash said in an interview with Sky News Arabia.

Gargash told the news site: “The Arab alliance is not an obstacle to the political solution in Yemen,” stressing that “the Houthis are the obstacle to political solutions”.

The Arab alliance, led by Saudi Arabia, intervened in Yemen to reinstate President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi who had been forced out of the country’s capital, Sana’a, by the Houthis.

Since the formation of the alliance, the UAE has begun supporting the Southern Transitional Council in a bid for Yemen to be split in to two states. Saudi Arabia and Hadi are not in favour of this solution.

This week, Kuwait in a speech before the United Nations General Assembly expressed its willingness to host a political peace talks for the parties to the conflict.

The conflict in Yemen has reached a stalemate for the past two years, with little to no change in territorial control.
