President of the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport, Dr Ismail Faraj has initiated an investigation in to the son of Egypt’s former presidential hopeful Sami Anan after he posted opinions and comments on social media.

Motaz Khamis, director of the media department at the academy, said in a statement that Samir Sami Anan, an academy employee, was investigated on 4 February.

“He was suspended from work and referred to the accountability committee, the highest authority in the academy,” he added.

Egypt: Court cannot rule against elderly presidential candidates

Last month, 70-year-old Sami Anan was awaiting the approval of Egypt’s Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) so that he could run in the presidential race. The council responded in a statement that included accusations of fraud and incitement against the army and a decision to detain him for questioning. The council’s decision ended Anan’s ambition to run in the upcoming presidential elections scheduled for next March.
