UN renews arms embargo on Libya

June 13, 2018 at 3:46 pm

The UN Security Council on Monday unanimously adopted a resolution to extend the arms embargo imposed on Libya for one year.

“Terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security,” resolution 2420 said.

The resolution requested the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, to report to the members of the Council on the implementation of the resolution within 11 months.

On 14 June last year, the Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution authorising the inspection of vessels off the coast of Libya by force.

Libyan Prime Minister Fayez Al-Sarraj has long advocated for the UN-imposed arms embargo to be partially lifted against the presidential guard and the coast guard in an effort to help the country face terror groups and bring calm to the war-torn nation.
