Gaza’s seafront is a lifeline for Palestinians in the enclave, not only because it provides them an outlet to pass time and enjoy the outdoors, but also because it brings with it an essential food source.

This time of year sees a rise in the crab population, making it an opportune season for fisherman to include the crustacean in their catch.

There has been an increased demand for crab meat in recent years as a result of greater exposure to it, the various ways it can be prepared and eaten and its great health benefits. This has led to a rise in the cost of crab meat from $1 to $3.5 per kilogramme.

Crab season flourishes in September, with fishermen catching them in their nets and then coming together with their families to release them and sell them.
