Birzeit University students Mahmoud Anjatz, Baraa Romana, Amar Toil, Amer Hanoun and Abdallah Abu Kiatz were arrested by the Israeli security agency Shin Bet for allegedly planning a terror attack, 21 July 2024 [Shin Bet]

Israeli Security Agency Shin Bet yesterday claimed that it had arrested a “cell” of students from Birzeit University who were planning an operation under the direction of Hamas members in Turkiye, Israeli media reported.

In a statement, Shin Bet said that it had thwarted a major operation planned by a group of Birzeit University students, weapons were found and tens of thousands of dollars were confiscated.

This occurred, the statement added, “in a joint operation between Shin Bet, the Israeli army, and a police unit,” noting that “a cell consisting of students who are members of the [student arm of the] Hamas movement at Birzeit University, known as Al Kutla Islamiya, was arrested.”

It further mentioned that Shin Bet’s investigations of the suspects revealed that the cell members were making practical preparations to carry out a major operation, as well as a series of operations to transfer Hamas funds to field operatives.

It was alleged that this was done under the direction of senior Hamas officials in Turkiye.
