In a little-known mountainous area Bağarası, a village in the city of Bitlis, located in south-eastern Turkiye, people seem to defy all medical odds.
The villagers have lived without seeing any illness or death for over 150 years, according to the report of EKOL TV.
The most famous name in the village is Zaro Agha, who lived an incredible life of 157 years and became the oldest known person in the world. Having seen 10 Ottoman sultans, 5 prime ministers, 1 president and Emperor Napoleon, Zaro Agha’s life was like a witness to history.
Zaro Agha was invited by many European countries to share the secret of long life.
After Zaro Agha’s death, scientists from Japan and the USA conducted research in the village.
He became the focus of the world press and visited Paris in 1921, Italy in 1925, America in 1930 upon the invitation of an anti-alcohol association and England in 1931. During the single-party period, an advertising campaign was organised by the National Economy and Savings Society to benefit from Zaro Agha. The postcards, which had a picture of Zaro Agha standing between two women on one side and the words “Whoever eats Turkish grapes and hazelnuts like Zaro Agha and stimulates his digestive system with olive oil and Izmir figs will be healthy at this age like him” on the other, were translated into four languages in Hungary and distributed all over the world.
