The Higher Presidential Committee of Church Affairs in Palestine has urged the international community to take decisive action in support of justice for Palestinians, the World Council of Churches (WCC) has said in a press release.
The WCC reported that a Palestinian delegation visited its headquarters on 18 February to engage in discussions on justice, peace and human dignity. During the visit, the delegation led by Patriarch Theophilos III met with WCC General Secretary Reverend Professor Jerry Pillay, who reaffirmed the council’s commitment to advocating for a just peace and called for urgent measures to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
The delegation and the WCC also emphasised the urgent need for the international community to take decisive action in ensuring immediate access to humanitarian aid, including food, water, medical supplies and shelter.
During the meeting, the Patriarch expressed his gratitude for the WCC’s efforts. “The work of the World Council of Churches and the fellowship of churches is appreciated deeply in these challenging times. Today the Christian presence [in Palestine] faces many challenges.”
He highlighted ongoing threats to Jerusalem’s historic Christian community, pointing to systematic attempts by Israeli extremist groups to drive them out, as well as the impact of Israeli policy decisions and the war in Gaza.
“The Patriarchs and Heads of the Churches have not ceased to reiterate our calls for a lasting and effective ceasefire, economic support for rebuilding church-run hospitals, schools and charities, and access for the Heads of the Churches to Gaza,” he added.
Ramzi Khoury, a member of the PLO Executive Committee and chairman of the Church Affairs Committee, also underscored the importance of unity. “We appreciate your unwavering support for justice for our people during these challenging times,” he told the WCC. “Now, more than ever, the unity of the churches is crucial.”

“It is imperative for us to take a firm stand against the deliberate displacement of the Palestinian people. Today, the voice of the churches is urgently needed to advocate for a return to international law as a means to end wars and achieve justice,” he added.
“We reject the application of arrogance and force against our people. Accepting this harsh reality poses a threat not only to Palestinians but to all of humanity.”
The WCC reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the sanctity of Jerusalem, Bethlehem, and other religious sites, ensuring they remain places of worship and refuge rather than targets of conflict.
WCC General Secretary Rev. Dr. Jerry Pillay reiterated the organisation’s strong opposition to any plans for the forced transfer or permanent displacement of Palestinians from their land.
Pillay emphasised that true peace cannot be achieved without addressing the root causes of the conflict, including the illegal occupation, systemic discrimination, and the ongoing denial of Palestinian self-determination.
The visit also centred on prayers for the strength and resilience of Palestinian Christians, alongside the WCC’s unwavering support for churches, communities, and the people of Palestine.
