Israeli official calls for West to support coup authorities in Egypt

February 11, 2014 at 12:40 pm

Deputy Israeli Foreign Minister Ze’ev Elkin has called for the West to quickly offer economic support to the new Egyptian authorities that seized power after a military coup in order to undermine any chances of the Muslim Brotherhood returning to power.

Speaking on Monday at the Begin-Sadat Study Centre at the Israeli Bar-Ilan University, Alkin argued that the absence of aid to Egypt could lead to the return of what he called “extremist Islamic forces”, hinting at the Muslim Brotherhood.

Elkin explained that the West, “which has divided the Islamic world into ‘good secularists’ and ‘bad Islamists’, now has to stand behind its allies instead of calling for them to reintegrate the Islamists back into the political system.”
