An MP in the centre grouping in the Coalition of Iraqis, pharmacist Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Omar, has concluded that the popular opposition demonstrations against the Al-Maliki government will widen to include the southern provinces where the Shiites are in a majority. “They share several of the demands of the people in the northern and central provinces,” he said.
According to Dr. Iqbal, the House of Representatives, as the legislative entity, bears part of the responsibility for the current situation.
He expressed his hope that the government’s move to establish 11 judicial bodies to resolve the issue of detainees and pardon those who are women will not be an act of deliberate procrastination, something that has always been done by the Iraqi government on other matters.
