Haniyeh calls for emergency Arab summit to discuss Israeli aggression in Jerusalem

The elected Prime Minister in Gaza, Ismail Haniyeh, yesterday (9 January) called on Arab leaders and the President of the Arab League, Colonel Muammar Al Gaddafi, to convene an emergency summit to address the recent Israeli attacks and demolitions in Jerusalem.

Mr Haniyeh made the appeal during a meeting with members of a visiting Libyan aid convoy, “Jerusalem 5”. He said Jerusalem was presently facing its most critical threats since it fell under the Occupation; as the Israeli Occupation accelerates its campaign to destroy historical landmarks and traces of the Palestinian heritage. Haniyeh emphasised that an emergency meeting was needed to develop clear policies in support of Jerusalem and its people. He condemned the recent demolition of the Shepherd Hotel in Sheikh Jarrah, East Jerusalem, stressing that all attempts to change the character and nature of Jerusalem will neither succeed or change the facts of history.

The Libyan convoy members reaffirmed their support for the besieged Gaza Strip, promising to pass on Haniyeh’s message.

The “Jerusalem 5” convoy broke the siege on Thursday evening (6 Jan 2010) via the Rafah crossing with Egypt, carrying equipment and vital goods from Libya for the Palestinian people.
