The Bank of Israel will release a new coin bearing an image of the Jordan River; Israel’s Maariv newspaper reported. The Bank has not set the coin’s value or its date of release to the markets.

The newspaper said on Wednesday that the new coin named “piece of memory” is devoted “to the historical and religious status of the Jordan River which was mentioned in the Torah several times as a place of miracles”.

According to the newspaper, Israel considers the Jordan River as one of the most important touristic sites which “attracts Christian pilgrims from across the world”.

The Jordan River is a natural boundary between the territories occupied by Israel in 1967 and Jordan. Israel demands to control the area in any future settlement with the Palestinians.
