The Egyptian authorities closed the Rafah border crossing on Tuesday “until further notice”, a senior Palestinian official has reported.
Speaking to Anadolu news agency, Gaza’s Director of Borders and Crossings Maher Abu Sabha said that 21 passengers were able to enter Gaza from Egypt prior to the closure. “Five Palestinian buses carrying 428 travellers and humanitarian cases going to Egypt also used the terminal,” he added.
Abu Sabha pointed out that the Egyptian authorities prevented 23 people from leaving Gaza, without giving any reason for the decision. Egyptian officials were not immediately available to comment.
In October, Egypt closed the Rafah crossing following an attack on the Egyptian army in the north of the Sinai Peninsula, in which 31 were killed and 30 were wounded.
