An Egyptian appeals court yesterday acquitted Yasser Ali, spokesman of the first freely-elected Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, on charges of assisting former Prime Minister Hisham Qandil flee the country.
Qandil was sentenced to one year in jail in 2013.
Ali, who was released from jail in November 2014 after spending 11 months, appealed the ruling. He was also acquitted on charges of belonging to the banned Muslim Brotherhood.
The former official resigned from his post as Morsi’s spokesperson in February 2013, saying he felt the media was attacking him personally.
Egyptian authorities have launched an unrelenting crackdown on supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood since Morsi’s ouster in July 2013.
Morsi and other members of the Muslim Brotherhood are now behind bars facing a multitude of criminal charges including inciting violence and espionage.
