Report: Arab women paid higher than men

Arab women receive higher wages than men, a report released by Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics to mark International Women’s Day which falls on 8 March revealed.

According to the report, Arab women’s wages per hour are 6.1 per cent higher than men.

The report pointed out that women spend more years in education than men; therefore they ultimately make more money.

Nearly 75 per cent of Arab women are unemployed including a majority of universities graduates.

However, the overall image is entirely different in Israel where the report indicates that a women’s average wage in 2013 amounted to 7,280 shekels ($1,818) compared to 10,683 shekels ($2,668) for men which means that on average women receive 31.9 per cent lower salaries than men.

With regards to marriage, the report said the average age of marriage for Jewish women is 25.9 years compared with 25.4 years for Christian women and 21.9-23.2 years for Muslim and Druze women.

Meanwhile, the percentage of Arab women who become mothers by the age of 17 years amounted to 45 per cent and 35 per cent for Jewish women.

The percentage of women who became mothers and already had children by the age of 17 years amounted to 11 per cent among Jews and eight per cent among Arabs.
