The trial of ousted President Mohamed Morsi on espionage charges has been adjourned by Cairo Criminal Court. The ex-president of Egypt faces 10 charges of espionage with the State of Qatar, along with a number of others, including an employee of Al-Jazeera television. Together they are accused of “handing over to Qatari intelligence classified documents linked to national security in exchange for one million dollars.”
The public prosecutor said that the case against the accused, of whom seven are in custody, represented “the biggest act of treason and espionage” ever carried out against Egypt. Prosecutor Hesham Barakat referred the defendants to the court after investigations conducted by the Supreme State Security Prosecution.
Morsi, was ousted violently by his defence minister in July 2013. He is involved in three other trials, including another case of alleged espionage, with Hamas.
