June 22, 2015 at 10:30 am

Egypt’s Attorney General Hisham Barakat has sent a letter to the German authorities and Interpol demanding the extradition of Al-Jazeera journalist Ahmed Mansour who was arrested on Saturday in Berlin airport, judicial sources revealed.

According to an unnamed source, Mansour – who holds dual Egyptian-British citizenship – has been detained at Berlin airport following the issuance of an arrest warrant by Egyptian authorities.

“The Attorney General has taken all legal procedures to extradite Mansour in accordance with international agreements,” the source explained.

German authorities and the Interpol were not immediately available for comment.

Early yesterday, the Egyptian interior ministry said in a statement that it coordinated with the justice ministry to extradite Mansour who has been sentenced to 15 years in prison over charges of torturing an Egyptian citizen.

On Saturday, Al-Jazeera said the German authorities stopped Mansour in Berlin airport while he was on his way back to Doha, Qatar.
