Egypt dissolves 14 more NGOs

July 8, 2015 at 11:25 am

Egypt’s Social Solidarity Minister, Ghada Wali, has issued an order to dissolve 14 non-governmental organisations in 13 provinces, apparently because of their links with the Muslim Brotherhood.

The minister explained that the order was an application of the Cairo Court of Urgent Matters decision to ban the Muslim Brotherhood and confiscate its assets. The NGOs’ assets will be transferred to a committee established by the court for this purpose.

Wali has also published a decision to form new boards for 21 civil society associations including 17 in Dakahlia Governorate, two in Qena and one Fayoum.

The Egyptian government dissolved 169 NGOs in February and 112 more on 1 March; another 99 were closed down later in March, again as part of the implementation of the court ruling about the Brotherhood. The latest closure order brings to 434 the number of NGOs closed in Egypt this year alone.
