119 Brotherhood supporters jailed in Egypt

Some 119 Muslims Brotherhood supporters were sentenced to between 10 years and life in Egypt yesterday on charges of violence and burning a church in 2013.

The Sohag Criminal Court sentenced 31 members of the banned group to life imprisonment, 57 others to 15 years while a further 31 defendants received 10 year prison terms.

A total of 68 defendants were present during the trial while the others were sentenced in absentia.

Of those sentenced the 89 defendants with the longest jail terms were also told to pay damages.

The defendants were accused of burning a church in Sohag, possessing weapons, killing 15 persons, attempting to kill three others in addition to other charges.

The court session was held under tight security.
