Syrian regime forces have continued their bombardment of areas under opposition control around Mount Turkmen near Latakia, Anadolu news agency has reported. Heavy artillery is being used to target the villages of Burj Al-Qasab, Jardkulai and Aukdag; the explosions could be heard across the border in Turkey’s Hatay state.
Thousands of Syrian civilians from Mount Turkmen and Kurds from the countryside of Latakia have fled towards the Turkish border. According to Anadolu, some of the displaced civilians opted to stay in camps on the Syrian side while others entered Turkey, after a routine security check on the border.
The Turkish authorities have given priority to women, children and elderly men; the local Red Crescent Society has distributed food and water to the refugees.
Nearly 40,000 Syrians from the countryside around Latakia and Idlib have fled to the Turkish border over the past two months.
