The Nazareth Magistrate’s Court yesterday sentenced Member of the Knesset Hanin Zoabi to a suspended sentence of six months and a fine of 3,000 Israeli shekels ($750) for insulting civil servants.
Zoabi had insulted Israeli police officers of Arab decent during protests following the brutal murder of Palestinian teen Mohamed Abu Khdeir in 2014.
As part of her plea deal, Zoabi gave up her Knesset immunity and apologised for the incident. She will be on parole for three years.
Commenting on the sentence, Zoabi said: “This is an unnecessary decision, this entire trial is unnecessary. I fight oppression by the regime. We are fighting against racist policies, not against private people, and this is why I apologised.”
