Egypt closes 25 Muslim Brotherhood NGOs

April 21, 2016 at 10:41 am

Twenty-five Muslim Brotherhood affiliated NGOs in 11 Egyptian governorates have been closed down, a senior Egyptian minister revealed yesterday.

Egyptian Minister of Social Solidarity Ghada Waly added that she sacked the board members of two other NGOs and replaced them by members chosen by the government.

A source from the ministry, who preferred to remain anonymous, said that the ministry consulted the General Assembly for Egyptian NGOs before taking the decision.

“Currently, the funds are being counted and the properties are being listed as an administrative group is being tasked to liquidate the NGOs within one month since the decision was issued. This group is going to provide a report about the results.”

On 3 August last year, the government committee announced it had seized the funds and properties of 1,345 Brotherhood leaders. The properties included 103 schools.

In September 2013, the Court of Urgent Matters in Cairo banned the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, as well as all the NGOs, charities and real estate owned by it or any of its leaders or members.
