The humanitarian conditions of nearly 70,000 Syrian refugees stranded on Jordan’s north-eastern border with Syria is deteriorating a week after a suicide attack prompted Jordan to announce the area a closed military zone.
Last week a suicide bomber believed to be a Daesh militant drove a vehicle from the Syrian side and rammed it into a military base close to Rukban camp, killing seven border guards and wounding 13 more.
Aid workers say the decision has hampered the introduction of aid to the refugees.
Mohammad Momani, Jordan’s minister of state for media affairs and government spokesman, said that national security transcends above all considerations, adding that the Jordanian authorities believe the stranded group has become an epicentre for Daesh militants.
Momani said that humanitarian organisations have other ways to deliver aid to those in need.
