Gunmen have attacked a police patrol in Cairo killing three and wounding five in a late night drive-by-shooting, the Egyptian Interior Ministry said in a statement.
Two of the policemen killed held the rank of Captain, reports the Associated Press.
The gunmen approached the patrol in the neighbourhood of Nasr City before an exchange of gunfire took place. No group has yet taken responsibility for the attack and an investigation is currently underway.
Egypt has been battling Daesh in the Sinai for several years with the terrorist group claiming responsibility for the twin bombing of two Coptic churches in the country in April.
