Qatar envoy arrives in Gaza

July 7, 2017 at 11:42 am

Senior Qatari officials arrived in the Gaza Strip yesterday to discuss efforts to rebuild the besieged enclave, according to the Palestinian Information Centre.

The Qatari Ambassador to Gaza and the head of the Qatari Committee for the Reconstruction of Gaza, Mohammed El Emadi, are expected to stay in the region for several days as they oversee dozens of construction projects sponsored by Doha which are estimated at a value of $407 million.

Progress on the projects has been slow because of restrictions as a result of Israel’s stifling ten-year siege on the coastal Strip. As a result, a UN report has warned that the Strip will be uninhabitable by 2020.

The visit comes at a critical time for the region, as Qatar responds to the severing of diplomatic ties by Gulf countries and Egypt which accuse Doha of supporting terrorism. Qatar rejects the charges.
