The International Union for Muslim Scholars (IUMS) called yesterday for the Sudanese government to respect the right to peaceful protest, accelerate solving the crisis and “prosecuting the corrupt and aggressors”.

In a statement, the IUMS called for all sides “to preserve public and private property and to maintain the protests peacefully,” Anadolu reported.

The statement added: “Sudan is experiencing a severe economic crisis that includes hikes in flour prices, unbearable lack of cash, shortage of fuel, bread and medicine which has pushed the people to take to the streets to express their discontent about this situation.”

IUMS also warned that “there are certain sides with different agendas which are planning to drag the country to an unknown future that undermines its unity, safety and stability”.

The statement pointed out that the right to peaceful demonstration is guaranteed by Sharia law and international law, stressing the importance of hold to account everyone proved to have killed innocent people, whether from the side of the government or the demonstrators.

It also called for prosecuting those officials who led the country and its people to this tragic end, as well as to deter all those who exploit the people’s interests.
