The flag of the Syrian Baath regime was removed from the Syrian Embassy building in Moscow yesterday, following the collapse of a regime that ruled the country for 61 years, Anadolu reported.

Footage captured by the news agency showed the flagpole at the Syrian Embassy in Moscow empty after the fall of the Baath regime in Syria. The flag was later replaced with the Syrian opposition’s “revolution flag”.

Early on Sunday, Syrian opposition factions entered Damascus and took control of the capital, as regime forces withdrew from public institutions and streets. This marked the end of 61 years under the rule of the Baath Party and 53 years of Assad family dominance.

The clashes between Syrian regime forces and opposition factions began on 27 November in the western countryside of Aleppo Province. The opposition subsequently captured Aleppo City, Idlib Province, and the cities of Hama, Daraa, Sweida and Homs before finally seizing Damascus.

Bashar Al-Assad, who had governed Syria since July 2000 after succeeding his father Hafez Al-Assad, fled Damascus aboard an aircraft to Moscow, sources told Russian state news agency TASS.
