Israel’s ‘Preferential Democracy’: Accept Inequality or Lose Your Seat | Palestine This Week
Israel’s election has left neither camp with a majority, and unseating Benjamin Netanyahu is impossible without the 19 seats held by Palestinian parties, yet no Zionist party will govern with them. This week we ask what that deadlock reveals about a state that offers Palestinian citizens the vote but not equality, from Gadi Eisenkot’s demand that Arab parties recognise Israel as a Jewish state to liberal Zionists rebranding inequality as “preferential democracy”. We also look at a new report tracing an Islamophobic influence campaign in Europe to Israel, and at the anti-Muslim smears dominating the US election campaign.

MEMO in Conversation with Benjamin Moser
In this episode of MEMO Conversations, we speak with Pulitzer Prize-winning author Benjamin Moser about his book Anti-Zionism: A Jewish History. We explore one of the book’s central arguments: Jewish opposition to Zionism has a long history, yet many of the people who voiced it have been written out of the story. We also discuss the history of Arab Jews and what it reveals about the idea that Jews and Arab have always been in conflict. Our conversation asks what this history can teach us at a time when opposition to Zionism is often conflated with anti-Semitism. MORE >>> MEMO in Conversation With

When the World Sleeps: Stories, Words and Wounds of Palestine
UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese’s book When the World Sleeps: Stories, Words and Wounds of Palestine (Hardie Grant Books, 2026) opens with excerpts from her speech to the UN General Assembly on 30 October 2024. “Those of you who have not uttered a word about what is happening in Gaza demonstrate that empathy has evaporated from this room,” Albanese stated. As months turned into years, the international community proved Albanese right. The book was written at a time when Albanese was sanctioned by the US as a “specially designated national”. In the introduction, Albanese writes of the contradictions emanating directly from the UN, which refused to use the word genocide when referring to Gaza. “The system that represses the Palestinians […]
