In addition to bombing Gaza, Israel has carried out misinformation campaigns to garner support, claiming it has a ‘right to defend itself’ through its actions in Gaza, and using unsubstantiate claims that Al-Qassam fighters raped women and beheaded babies on 7 October 2023. Though the claims continue to be repeated by officials in Israel and the US, the beheaded babies story has been proven to be false while there is no evidence that anyone was raped on 7 October and no victims of such crimes.
It has also claimed that Palestinian - and later Lebanese - resistance fighters use civilians as human shields and that they store their weapons among residential buildings and hospitals.
