Due to the ongoing bombing campaign, it is unclear how many Palestinians have been disappeared by Israel and are now being held in military detention. However, the hundreds that have been released have shown signs of torture and abuse.
Israeli soldiers were also detained for raping a prisoner who later needed medical care as a result of the abuse at the Sde Teiman detention facility, which has been described as a ‘death camp’. Doctors were said to have taken part in the torture of detainees.
Upon their release from detention during the November truce, female prisoners spoke of the harsh conditions of their detention and how Israel routinely deprived Palestinian detainees of essentials including covers, mattresses, and toiletries.
As the number of Palestinians held by Israel grew, so too did calls from Israel’s far-right National Security Minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, to introduce the death penalty in an effort to deal with overcrowding in prisons.
Skin diseases have also spread among detainees as a result of the conditions they are subjected to.
