Experts and historians, including Professor Ilan Pappe, have however pointed out that Israel’s actions in Gaza are a sign of its desperation and effort to survive as it is crumbling from within.
Prior to 7 October 2023, Israelis had held weekly protests calling for their government to step down as it had tried to introduce legislation to curb the power of the Supreme Court to declare government decisions unreasonable. This would have left government policy with no means of being checked.
Since it launched its brutal bombing campaign in Gaza, Israel has witnessed renewed protests for prisoners to be returned and for a ceasefire to be agreed to end the bombing and stop further degradation of the country’s economy which has suffered a blow as a result of the lack of tourists and evacuation of communities from the north and the Gaza envelope.
