France: Geneva II will not succeed if Al-Assad remains in power

January 30, 2014 at 3:09 am

On Friday French President François Hollande said that the Geneva II Conference on Syria will not be successful if Al-Assad remains in power.

In an EU summit discussing the Syrian issue, Hollande said that the aim of Geneva II would not just be for meetings.

“If Geneva II reiterated the authority of Bashar al-Assad, or if it led to a political transition from Bashar al-Assad to Bashar al-Assad, we would have faced few chances to consider it a political solution for the Syrian issue then,” Hollande said.

Meanwhile, he noted that the current situation in Syria has “reached the most dangerous point regarding the number of internally and externally displaced refugees and the humanitarian crisis.”

In the same line, French foreign minister Laurent Fabius has recently expressed his doubts regarding the success of the Geneva II Conference.
