Toyota, Suzuki and General Motors suspend operations in Egypt

February 7, 2014 at 3:21 pm

Japanese car makers Toyota and Suzuki decided on Thursday to suspend operations in Egypt on the grounds of safety, Reuters has reported. Both companies fear for the lives of their employees.

America’s General Motors also said on Thursday that it is stopping all work in the country until Sunday at the earliest. Egyptian news network RNN referred to the same safety concerns as the reason for the suspension.

“Based on the company’s policy to offer a safe working environment for our workers,” said GM in a statement, “we have given permission for all employees to stay away from work until Sunday.”
