Hamas is preparing to select new leadership

February 17, 2014 at 11:16 pm

Newspaper Al-Quds Al-Arabi has learnt from informed sources within the Islamic movement that Hamas has completed its preparations for internal elections to elect a new consultative (Shura) council and political bureau. The process is expected to take place later this month. One change from previous elections is that the political bureau will have more members.

The anonymous sources said that the movement’s members in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and abroad will use a new electoral system this year, but did not explain what that will be. The Shura Council will appoint the head of the political bureau.

Pointing out that “there are no organisational links between Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt”, the sources denied reports traced back to the Brotherhood that Khaled Meshaal will head the group in the Levant.
