Tora prison refuses to transfer Sultan to hospital despite deteriorating health condition

June 27, 2014 at 2:13 pm

The warden of Tora prison in Cairo has refused to transfer Mohammed Salah Sultan, the son of prominent Muslim Brotherhood member and Islamic preacher Salah Sultan, to hospital, despite his deteriorating health after he fainted four times in a row on Thursday and suffered from a rapid decline in his blood sugar and blood pressure levels, Al-Alam Online news website reported.

The court that Mohammed Sultan is standing trial before had issued a decision four days ago to transfer him to Al-Qasr Al-Aini hospital due to his deteriorating health condition, which is a result of his on-going hunger strike. But despite the court’s decision, the Tora prison authorities are refusing to transfer him to the hospital.

Mohammed Sultan is an American citizen who has been imprisoned since last August on charges of misinforming the media and being associated with the Muslim Brotherhood.

Explaining why he is on hunger strike, Al-Jazeera America quotes Mohammed Sultan as saying that: “Because striking is the only peaceful means left to me to resist injustice and oppression, because opinion or thought or even sympathy is not a crime.”
