Libyan Parliament revokes law banning Gaddafi-era officials from political life

February 3, 2015 at 2:48 pm

The internationally-recognised Libyan parliament in Tobrok has overturned a controversial law banning officials who served within the regime of late president Muammar Gaddafi from participating in political life for a period of 10 years.

In a statement to Anadolu news agency, MP Tareq al- Jeroushi said the cancellation was made to ensure freedom of participation for everyone. “The Libyan justice system will decide about those involved in committing crimes or financial or administrative corruption,” said Jeroushi.

The Libyan General National Congress (GNC) ratified the law on 5 May 2013, a decision that at the time faced strong criticism from political circles and activists who said it reinforced exclusion.

The Libyan parliament amended the law in December last year to include Gaddafi’s wife and his sons as well as his first and second degree relatives.
