Former Egyptian minister arrested on graft charges

October 5, 2015 at 9:12 am

Egyptian authorities yesterday announced the arrest of former Egyptian Minister of Manpower Nahed Ashry over graft charges, sources told the Anadolu Agency.

Ashry was arrested on Saturday at Cairo International Airport upon her return from Hajj in Saudi Arabia, the sources said.

A security source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: “The Administrative Observatory Services arrested former Minister of Manpower Nahed Ashry who held the position in Ibrahim Mahlab’s government.”

The source added that Ashry was taken to the Public Prosecution of the Supreme State Security Services for investigations into the graft charges. The sources did not mention the steps which would be taken against the minister.

Anadolu reported that a senior official in the financial ministry recently filed a complaint against Ashry to the Public Prosecutor accusing her of stealing 600,000 Egyptian pounds ($200,000) from the ministry’s Emergency Fund.

Ashry is not the first minster in Mahlab’s government to face such charges. On 7 September, Agriculture Minister Salah Hilal resigned and was arrested, along with other businessmen, over corruption charges.

Egyptian President Abdel Fatah Al-Sisi commissioned the former Oil Minister Sharif Ismail to form a new government after the resignation of Mahlab’s government.
