Iraq’s President Fuad Masum yesterday urged the international community to support the reconstruction of his country, Turkey’s Anadolu Agency reported.

A statement released by his office said Masum met with Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom and Defence Minister Peter Hultqvist in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, and pointed out to them that Iraq’s infrastructure has been destroyed by years of war, siege and violence.

According to the statement, Masum explained that Iraqi authorities “are working to achieve community reconciliation to serve as a basis for civil peace, stability and prosperity in the country.”

He invited Sweden to participate in the Iraq Reconstruction Conference which is expected to take place early next year.

Meanwhile, Wallstrom reiterated her country’s and the European Union’s support for Iraq to achieve national unity and defeat Daesh.

He said Sweden will continue to provide political, military and humanitarian support to Iraq especially with regards to relief assistance to displaced people and help them return to their homes”.

Wallstrom and Hultqvist arrived in Baghdad early yesterday from Kuwait on an official visit to discuss bilateral relations and coordination in the fight against terrorism.
